Things You'll Need:
- Garden
- Various plants and bulbs
- Hand trowel
- Shovel
-
Step 1
Plant bulbs and perennial plants in the fall or the spring prior to the one you want early flower color for. Making a beautiful garden requires planning and patience.
-
Step 2
Begin by digging a garden bed or preparing an existing one. Use organic fertilizer and compost to augment the soil for healthy plants.
-
Step 3
Plant the right plants to have early spring color in your garden. Start with perennials such as sweet violet, primrose, leopard's bane, and creeping phlox. Be sure to research the appropriate locations and amounts of sun for each type of plant before planting it.
-
Step 4
Plant the bulbs in your garden after the perennials. Since bulb foliage dies back sooner than other plants, these should be tucked among later-growing plants. Good bulbs for early spring color in the garden include daffodils, crocus, snowdrops, scylla, and grape hyacinth. There are many others as well.
-
Step 5
Place small stakes or tags in the garden where you planted the perennial plants and bulbs. You do not want to accidentally dig them up or damage them when working with your summer and fall garden jobs.
-
Step 6
Now wait! As you enjoy the rest of the year in your garden, know that you will have early spring color the next year in your garden.
