How to Choose a Dog

It's not that easy to choose a pet. People tend to fall in love with the color and the breed. By the time the owner brings home their pet, they learn that they have just bought the Tasmanian Devil. When I was a little girl, my parents took my brothers and I to a dog pound. I was around 5 or 6. I fell in love with animals at a young age. They were my friends and they made me feel safe. All of the dogs were in cages. They barked and wagged their tails with excitement which meant ..." Pick me! Pick me!" I walked over to a cage and I stuck my hand in it. I was told immediately to remove my hand from the cage. Apparently, there were signs that stated this, but I couldn't read. Before I withdrew my hand, the dog inside the cage walked over and licked it. My parents looked at one another and decided that he was the one. We would bring him home. His name was Pudge. He was half boxer and half St. Bernard. We had him for 13 years or more. He was an incredible addition to our family.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Phone Book (for ASPCA or other kennels in your area)
  • Research (check online or go to the library and read up on different dog breeds)
  • Family (bring your family when you are looking for a dog. Everyone must interact with him/her to determine if he/she is the right pet for everyone.
Step1
I will be happy to share my family history with you! Get papers on your pets family history
Step2
Walk? Uh-huh...I heard you... An animal should match your personality/lifestyle. If they are laid back and you are an active person, that is not the pet for you.
Step3
ASPCA is a good place to start! Always go to a shelter. They need homes and someone to love them. The volunteers/workers that are there have an abundance of information on all of the animals and can place you with the right pet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Mutts are the best way to go. They are even tempered, loving, cuddly and make great family pets.
  • If you are interested in breeds, be sure you do your homework. Some breeds a extremely temperamental, while others are loving and faithful companions. Be sure that you don't overindulge your pet or he/she could become unstable. Again, do your homework especially when buying a dog.

on 4/28/2008 This is very helpful, since I find dog breeds to be very confusing. One breed is friendly but rambunctous and another is calmer but bites.

I got my first cat by accident, since she just showed up at my door. But she got bored being alone all day while I was at work. I went to the SPCA and got a second cat and he is my little buddy. He and I have spent many years side by side while my first cat sat on the back of our chair.

Animals are the best!!!
