Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Choose low fat, frozen waffles.
There are several brands of waffles available that have less than three grams of fat per serving. A good choice is Kashi Go Lean Waffles. Select a low fat waffle and you'll save a significant number of calories and still have the convenience of being able to pop it in the toaster and eat it on the run.
Step2
Make your own.
If you purchase a waffle iron, you can find a variety of online recipes for making low fat, lower calorie waffles. A Google search will reveal lots of healthy waffle recipes you can make at home.
Step3
Watch the toppings.
Instead of slathering on the butter, use a trans fat free spray on margarine instead. One alternative is a "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" in the spray bottle. Five squirts of this buttery spray has zero calories. Use a sugar free syrup or substitute an all fruit spread instead of syrup on your healthy waffle.
Step4
Save them for weekends.
Instead of eating a frozen waffle every morning for breakfast, eat some warm oatmeal and eggs to start the day with a healthy dose of protein. This will help to keep you full until lunchtime. Save the waffles for the weekend.
Step5
Add some fruit and berries.
Increase the antioxidant content of your waffle by layering some fresh blueberries or strawberries on top.
