Have you ever wondered who's responsible for some of your favorite music and what did he/she do to create the sound in which you enjoy so much? If you often ask these questions check out the following. You dont need every item on the following list. For starters, invest in a beat machine or keyboard, and connect proper cords to a decent stereo system to hear everything. Sooner or later you'll want to get a pc/mac to get production/recording software.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Beat Machine/Sampler
  • Keyboard
  • Sound Module optional
  • Digital Effects Processor optional
  • Pc/Mac optional
  • Production Software
  • Recording Software
  • Decent stereo amplifier/
  • headphones optional
  • speaker monitors

Step1
I would suggest researching music theory to familiarize yourself more with music creation. Learn about drum patterns(kick,snare,hihat,808). Learn about Sampling. Learn about Equipment Connections. Learn about Midi(Musical Instrument Data Interface. Learn about effects processing.
Step2
With everything connected by MIDI cords and other cords, start off with the beat machine/Sampler. (Akai MPC 2000) Load up the best drum and sample sounds available.(You know what sounds best.) Choose a tempo. Use separate tracks for each sound. Create a drum pattern. Next try playing a bass(low notes) pattern on a keyboard(Korg Triton 61key or Roland Fantom-S 61key). Then try a chord/melody(combination of notes played a certain way)from your keyboard, try other different sounds to add. Dont be afraid to add(use other sounds from other hardware/software available). If it sounds like too much take something out. Once you have created what they call a groove, arrange the beat/song Mode( intro- verse -chorus- bridge- outro- programing sounds in & out during play length).
Burn on a external cdburner.(if you have no computer and related software)Note: For those with Pc/Macs we have more options.

Start a Session in your software program (Pro Tools,Magic,Cubase&etc.)Set up Midi Options to Enabled. Track out the sounds (recording individual sounds)
Step3
Now that you have your individual sounds and patterns. You can now mix(adjust volume,eq,efx, panning)each individual sounds. Arrange the beat( intro- verse- chorus- bridge- outro- programing sounds in & out during mix).Bounce to disk(recording overall sound mixdown)
And were done! That wasnt too bad now was it? Remember practice makes better. Learn everything your equipment can do because it will help your creativity!

Tips & Warnings

  • Visit a music store and play around with equipment and ask questions before purchasing anything! Check Music, Classifieds, Check pawn shops, Check on line for equipment before you purchase an item brand new. You might get a deal! Make sure you fully inspect operation of used equipment before buying. Also there are places where you can download sounds for free for hardware/software by creating a free profile. (www,kicksandsnares.com www.mpcsounds.com and etc).
  • Visit a Recording Studio(there are some around in your area look in the phone book)
  • Next time you online do a google for music creation or check out YouTube and type "beats" or "tutorial"( You'd be suprised what you can find for tips & tricks)
  • You Dont need all the equipment listed. Dont spend no more than you need to. Technology has made it fairly easy and is less expensive than ever for anyone who wants to be a record producer. They have programs such as Garage Band, Fruity Loops, and Reason that will turn a PC/Mac into a production lab. Hardware is more affordable than ever also. (Keyboards & Beat machines). Be good to your equipment and your equipment will be good to you- enough said!
