Step1
Find a Play Date Friend
For many parents, this is the hardest step of planning a play date. If your child is in preschool or daycare, ask other parents if their children would be interested in coming over for play date. Your co-workers with children and other members of your community can also be asked.
Step2
Clean and Child Proof Your Home
Having a clean and child proofed home is important, especially when hosting a first ever play date. For first play dates, parents often want to attend or at least view your home. You want them to get a good impression and know that their child will be safe in your care.
As for the child proofing, even steps should be taken to protect toddlers and preschoolers. Make sure that all stairways are clear, bright, and noticeable. If you have a pool, be sure to keep the gate closed and locked.
Step3
Have Snacks and Drinks on Hand
While you may not need to buy snacks and drinks just for your child’s play date, it is ideal to have a wide range of snacks and drinks on hand. This is because you may not know what the other child likes to eat. In fact, it may be a good idea to ask about likes, dislikes, and allergies.
Step4
Choose Age Appropriate Activities
Choosing age appropriate activities is much easier when the child who is coming over for a play date is around the same age of your child. Age appropriate activities are not only important for safety, but they often mean less frustration and a better time.
Step5
Plan Fun Indoor Activities
Even if you intend to have your child and their play date play outside, it is still a good idea to have a number of activities on hand for indoors. Your child and their play date may get bored with playing outside or the weather may take a turn for the worse. To help ensure that your child’s play date has a good time and wants to come back, always have a backup plan.
Step6
Plan Fun Outdoor Activities
If you have a backyard, always have a number of outdoor activities on hand for your child’s play date. It is important to remember that some children enjoy spending most of their time outside, even if your child doesn’t. Remember to choose age appropriate activities. Activities, like catch and soccer, are ideal for all toddlers and preschoolers.
Step7
Be Sure to Extend Another Invitation
When your child’s play date is getting ready to leave, be sure to mention to his or her parents that you would like to do this again.
