Maintain your gear for safety and comfort.

Scuba diving is an expensive sport to participate in with a lot of equipment to buy. Be sure to get the most out of your equipment by properly maintaining it. This will ensure a long life for your scuba gear and additional safety for you.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • fresh water
  • silicone grease
  1. Step 1

Mask: After diving, rinse the mask thoroughly in fresh water to remove all salt. If you can't rinse it right away, keep it wet so that the salt doesn't dry on it. Once dry, keep out of direct sun, in a cool, dry place.

  2. Step 2

Fins: As with your mask, rinse your fins with fresh water after every use. Inspect straps often for wear and replace when necessary. Store in a cool, dry place outside of direct sun which could cause warping.

  3. Step 3

BCD: Always rinse your BCD with fresh water after use. You must rinse the inside and outside. Fill 1/3 of the way with fresh water through the inflater hose and the rest with air. Swish and turn it upside down to drain. Always store your BCD partially inflated.

  4. Step 4

Tank and valve: Rinse with fresh water as with the rest of your scuba gear. Check externally under the boot for corrosion. Have your tank inspected professionally for internal rust and corrosion every year. Never allow your tank to fully empty.

  5. Step 5

Regulator: Soak your regulator while still attached to your scuba tank if feasible. Make sure that the dust cover is in place and then rinse with gently flowing water. Do not press the purge button while rinsing. Have it serviced professionally once per year.

  6. Step 6

Pressure Gauge: Since the pressure gauge is connected to the regulator, your standard maintenance of the regulator is sufficient. Have your gauge serviced when you have your scuba regulator done.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always perform a safety buddy check before diving.
  • Always have your equipment serviced professionally at least once per year.
  • Never dive with faulty or suspect equipment.
