Before making adjustments to your water heater, first take your water's temperature.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • meat or candy thermometer
  • watch
  1. Step 1

Run the hot water in your tub or sink for 5 minutes.

  2. Step 2

While the water is running, hold the thermometer under the stream for 1 minute.

  3. Step 3

Turn off the water and read the temperature. If the temp reads above 120 degrees, you'll need to adjust the setting of the hot water heater.

Tips & Warnings
  • Running the faucet for 5 minutes wastes a lot of water. Try to perform this test while the water is already heated, such as after a hot shower.
