As a parent of a precious son who happens to have A.D.H.D., I know how trying at times it can be in so many ways. We all want the very best for our children and when life presents special challenges, sometimes parents need some assurance that it is going to be ok. Well, I am here to tell you, it is going to be ok. I am not opposed to drug therapy as a treatment option for severe A.D.H.D. but there are other options that have been successful for us. Here are a few options that have really helped with our son.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Time
  • energy
  • an open mind
  • love for your child
  • communication skills

Step1
First, get educated about A.D.H.D. read, read, read. Don't believe everything you hear from this person or that person. Talk to Doctors, educators, and people who specialize in this field. Gather any and all information you can about every aspect of A.D.H.D.
Step2
Second, try not to look at this as a "disability" rather, as a gift. Normally, people who have ADD/ADHD are above average intelligence and there are many highly successful adults who have ADD/ADHD. It may be more difficult for people with ADD/ADHD to accomplish certain tasks but there are other areas where they thrive.
Step3
Third, try not to use your child's ADHD as an excuse for them to break the rules of your home. Your child wants discipline and structure and although it may take a bit longer, they are capable of following the rules. They need to fulfil the consequences of their actions every single time without fail.
Step4
Finally, look closely at your child's diet. It really does make a difference. Limit sugar, boxed and can foods, and NO red dye. Many children react to red dye with hyperactivity and aggression. By removing ALL red dye from their diet, I promise you will see a big change in your child!

on 5/15/2008 I have two very young children and I worry about this as they get older. Thank you so much for writing this article. I believe that yes, sometimes it is truly necessary, but we are all too inclined to reach for the medicine bottle as a quick, easy, solution. Something is lost along the way.

on 5/1/2008 Dear Mr. Davidxb,
This is not one of the articles written by a "money hungry marketing team working day and night to corrupt parents' mind". As I stated in my article, I am not opposed to medication but it is NOT always the answer. The "natural" approach does work for some children and does not annoy a child 1/2 as much as many of the side effects from many ADHD medication does (like throwing up, unable to eat, unable to sleep being a robot/zombie). A caring mother will never do harm to her child by "employing her instincts" on her child, that is why she is their mother. Our job is to make adult decisions for our children when they can not by relying on our 'mother instincts'.

on 5/1/2008 As a general practitioner, I must say that the amount of farcicle remedies for ADHD and similar is one of the fastest growing markets. Aside from the money hungry marking teams working night and day to corrupt parents' minds, we have "the natural/homeopathic" approaches, which simply do not work at all and only annoy the child. But the most scary thing is the thousands of children I've treated that have been severely poisoned by the use of a) vitamin overdose, and b) dangerous non-prescribed concoctions of vitamins. A caring mother can do far more harm than ADHD by employing her "instincts" and information illicited from magazines. The best thing to do is stick to a vehemently strict medication protocol, and biofeedback therapy, which is both fun and extremely helpful. A drastic change in diet will create a drastic change in mood, for the worse, PASSIVELY slow him/her down a little on th

on 4/28/2008 When younger, one of our son's was ADD and another ADHD. I raised and showed dairy goats. Along with other mothers who had these dairy goats, we came to the conclusion that fresh goat's milk also helped. Our kids could be off ritalin during the summer but not when they were drinking milk at school. We begged ADGA to do further testing but as of yet, they haven't but still food for thought...

on 4/28/2008 Excellent article. Changing our childrens diets alone will increase their school performance.
