"Ham Radio operator at work"
http://www.rigpix.com/

Talking to some body else 150 miles away or farther on a very low power hand held walkie talkie sounds imposable but it is done every day by Ham radio operators ( Federally license Amateur Radio operators ). No high tech expensive equipment that uses pay per use satellite communication or other like devices, Just a very low powered ,"HT" hand held( walkie talkie ).

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A low power 2 meter or 220/440 MHz 2 way hand held 2 way radio.
  • A FCC issued license OR have some one there that has one.
  • Some one to talk to on the other end that has a radio with the same frequency(s).and license requirements.
  • Locate a"open repeater" some were between were you are and the person you are talking to.
  1. Step 1
    2 Way HT walkie talkie

Locate or find some one who has a 2 way 2 meter "HT" or hand held walkie talkie. You can buy these at most electronic stores or buy them used for $25.00- 200.00 dollars at ebay or other on-line electronic Estore. Many times you can find them at yard sales. The 2 meter is the most used and easiest to find but a 220 Mhz or 440 Mhz will work the same

  2. Step 2

Locate on line ( http://artscipub.com/repeaters/ ) or ask a local Ham radio operator were there is a open repeater any were between you and the person you want to talk to.
A repeater is simply A automated 2 way radio station that receives your signal and then transmits it on a matching frequency that is received by the radio you are talking to.

  3. Step 3
    A typical repeter tower.

Have the person you want to talk to use the same repeater and frequency and regardless of the other persons radio or location as long as they are in range and freqency of the repeater you can talk to them or any one else that's tuned to the repeater,

Tips & Warnings
  • With proper use the range of a low powered walkie-talkie is all most unlimited if the repeaters are link. If you intend to use a (HT=Walky-Talky or Hand held Transceiver) on a regular bases you need to get a amateur radio license to operate the radio with in the frequency you intend to use amateur radio license is required. If you don't have a license you must have a license operator present any time you key the microphone.
  • The easy way to do this is find a Ham radio operator near you to show you and they most likely have the equipment on hand for you to use. Most all Ham operators are VERY eager to help in this area.
  • Google or other search engine will help you find a Ham as all hams have a registered license with there addressee and some times a phone number.
  • You can find ham radio operators at www.qrz.org
  • Be SURE you have a license issued by the FCC that has privileges on the frequency you want to use. The 2 meter license is the beginner license and is the easiest to get.
  • If you don't have a license you can operate the radio ONLY if you have a license HAM present when you key the radio.
  • DO NOT attempt to use any of the high power equipment. It can be deadly.
