Tired of gritty iced tea? Something our great-grandmothers took for granted is once again the rage. Cooks call it "simple syrup," bartenders call it "bar syrup." Simple syrup stores well and makes it quick and easy to make sweet summer drinks.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 quart saucepan
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cups sugar
  • storage container
  1. Step 1

Put sugar and water in saucepan, stir briefly.

  2. Step 2

Over medium heat, stir until all the sugar is dissolved.

  3. Step 3

Cool syrup in pan, pour into storage container and refrigerate.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add syrup to iced tea, lemonade, and other summer drinks. If you like mint, cook a few leaves in the syrup, removing them before you refrigerate the syrup.
  • You'll quickly discover how much syrup you need to sweeten a glass or pitcher of cold drink.
  • Simple syrup works well in sangria or other punches, alcoholic or not.
  • If syrup boils and forms a residue on the sides of your saucepan, lower the heat. Leave on the stove only long enough to completely dissolve sugar.
