Vacuum: Vacuum cleaners that implement a HEPA filter are recommended to help prevent the dust mites from being redistributed throughout the room during vacuuming. Vacuums that are not equipped with these special filters can actually cause the allergy suffer more misery than not vacuuming the floor! Frequent vacuuming(both in your home and car) is highly recommended for allergy and asthma sufferers. If possible, have a non-allergic family member take the responsibility for vacuuming and do not enter the room for 20 minutes after cleaning. Airborne dust mites can aggravate highly sensitive individuals and trigger asthma attacks. Don’t forget fabric upholstery also can harbor mites and should be vacuumed on a regular basis to reduce allergen exposure.
Step2
Bedding: Encasements for bedding, such as dust proof allergen covers and pillow cases constructed of a non-permeable fabrics will provide a barrier from dust mites. Avoid wool or down bedding, since these will harbor more dust mites than synthetic or cotton counterparts. Light colors that will tolerate high heat are the best option for blankets and sheets. Launder bedding every week in hot water (130-140 degrees F) to kill dust mites. If you have bed accents that can not be laundered or withstand high heat, freeze overnight in a chest freezer.
Step3
Dusting: Dust surfaces of your home using a damp cloth or mop instead of dry ones. This will prevent the mites from becoming airborne
Step4
Storage & Clutter: Dust loves clutter. Plastic lidded containers are a great investment for storing excess items in your home. Placing items in these lidded plastic containers will also result in less “things” to clean and the boxes can be wiped down with a wet cloth to remove dust.
Step5
Carpet Vs. Hardwood/Tile Carpet is a porous surface that allows dust mites, animal dander and pollen to become deeply embedded and very difficult to remove. Hardwood and tile are ideal materials for the flooring of sensitive home owners. They are easy to clean and allow for almost complete removal of the allergens. However, these can be cost prohibitive and not always an option. If you can afford to remodel, consider the hard floor alternatives to improve your overall allergy health.
Step6
Humidity: Hot humid air is a perfect breeding ground for dust mites, pollens and mold. Purchasing a dehumidifier and an air cleaner will help to create a less desirable atmosphere for these unwanted guests.
Step7
Stuffed animals and decorations: Stuffed animals and household decorations(knick knacks) are infamous objects for “dust”. Cloth toys, such as stuffed animals, should be limited in households with allergy or asthma suffers. Washable toys are the best option, since they can be regularly laundered to remove mites. Knick knacks require constant attention to remove dust build-up.
