Having had insomnia for over 2 years. Treating it with drugs was making me miserable. I found this drug free way to cure insomnia. After 2 days and this process I was sleeping all night.
Realize that you are tired of not sleeping or tired of taking drugs to make you sleep.
Step2
Stay awake. Sounds silly but sleep deprivation will actually help insomnia. Stay awake all day no laying down, no resting, and no sleeping. Even if your exhausted stay awake. Find something to do. Take a shower if you get desperate not to lay down.
Step3
Go to be at midnight and not one minute before.
Step4
Set your alarm for 6 am. Stay in bed all night. No TV, No books, No distraction. Remember your bed is for sleeping.
Step5
When your alarm goes off at 6 am get out of bed. If you slept or not doesn't matter. Stay awake again all day with no resting or sleeping.
Step6
Start again at step 3. Repeat going to bed at midnight and getting up at 6 until you have slept from 12-6. When you do this slowly increase your sleep time until you have a normal schedule.
Step7
Ultimately what you are doing with these steps is resetting your internal clock. The exhaustion from not resting makes your body want to sleep.
Tips & Warnings
Not laying down during the day can be challenging if you haven't slept.
Find something to do. A craft, book, movie anything that keeps you awake all day.
Leaving the house and going to a busy place can be helpful. You can't lay down if your at the mall or a restaurant.
Try not to think about not having slept. Think about staying awake.
Get rid of the sleeping pills. Get them out of the house. If you have them you will want to give up sooner.
Don't drive if you are exhausted.
Being sleep deprived will make you grouchy but it will be worth it in the end.

I agree, this would have to work. My husband suffers from insomnia and refuses to take medicine or adhere to a set bedtime. I'll try to convince him to use your advice. 5 stars.
