Don't want to pay allot of money to have an electrician change out your dimmer switch. Do it yourself impress your friends and neighbors. Save yourself some money and spend it on dinner. Here's how
Meter, screwdrivers, needle nose pliers, wire nuts, and electrical tape, switch
Step1
make sure the power is off to the switch, find the circuit breaker for the light circuit, turn the breaker off check to see if the lights went off. Turn the breaker back on and make sure the correct circuit was turned off the light should come back on. Turn the breaker off and make sure no one turns it back on. You can verify the power is off once we disconnect the dimmer switch.
Step2
Unscrew the cover for the dimmer switch. Then unscrew the dimmer switch slowly pull it out of the wall being sure not to let the sides of the switch touch any metal in the wall. We are still assuming the power is still on even though we turned the breaker for the circuit off. Next we need to check to make sure the circuit is dead using a meter. Place one lead on the green wire and the other lead on the black wire coming from inside the wall. You should not read any voltage.
Step3
disconnect all the wires off the dimmer switch using a screwdriver, or untwist wire nuts. Place the dimmer switch to the side and pick up your light switch. Inside the wall there should be two or more white wires connected together with a wire nut. Next you should have two black or brown colored wires coming from separate wires inside the wall.
Step4
now you need to connect the switch in your hand. The switch should have two screws on it. You need to grab one of the wires from inside the wall and make sure the insulation is stripped about a half inch from the end. Form a hook with your needle nose pliers, then place the wire around the screw of the switch. The hook should face the direction you are going to tighten the screw. Finally grab the second wire inside the wall and repeat the same step
Step5
Add one layer of tape around the switch covering up the screws from accidental contact with metal boxes inside the wall. Now screw the switch into the wall with the two screws. Make sure the off sign on the switch is facing on top when you mount the switch inside the box. Finally the place the cover over the switch. Turn your breaker back on and flip the switch on
