Wings Wings

Do you ever think of making butterfly wings for a costume for yourself or your child but you just don't know how? You see the ones in stores but they cost a fortune or they just don't look right? Well, follow these steps and see what you come up with. Who knows you might just be making them for everyone on your block for Halloween!

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Woman's tights size large
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Glitter glue
  • Fabric Paint
  • Two white coat hangers
  • Silk artificial flowers

Step1
Select two wire coat hangers (preferably with a white coating) and shape them into a butterfly wing shape. Be careful not to distort the hanger too much because of the joints at the top of the hanger you don't want them to come apart.
Step2
Hoserie pinned After opening the package of pantyhose, spread them out flat and notice the shape of the hosiery does it have a reinforced heel and does it have a reinforced thigh area? If they do you don't want those in your wing pattern so cut around that area and use the part that is light and wispy. Once the reinforced areas are cut off, it is time to cut the hose open flat so that you can pin the flat fabric onto the hanger frame. Be sure to have very sharp scissors for this because you don't want them to skip or your edges will be jagged and a run might start within the hose. Lay the fabric flat and pin around edges like it is in the photo
Step3
Notice sewing After the fabric has been pinned to the hanger, it is time to sew around the inside of the edge of the hanger to secure the hosiery to the actual frame of the hanger.
Step4
Decorated wings Once the fabric is attached, it time to trim off the access and decorate the wings. You will have two individual wings that you don't have attached but this way, it is easier to decorate with the glitter glue. To make the swirls and circles it is much easier to have the wing lying flat so that you get the proper viewpoint of the proportion of the shapes.
Step5
After the wings are dry, it is time to join them together and decorate with artificial flower and elastic. All I do to attach the hangers together is, interlock the loops of the hanger, wrap both of them with batting and cover with felt. Gather the ends by sewing them and then you can attach the two loops of elastic to that area. Decorate the front middle section of the wings by hot gluing silk flowers to the middle section. Then, you are done!

Tips & Warnings

  • Try making fairy wings just change the shape and proceed the same way.
  • Always remember these can be made for children as well as adults. I have even seen teenage kids wear these to Goth parties.
