How to Skip Stones

It can be very satisfying to fling a stone into the water and watch it gracefully skip over the wet surface. Getting the technique down for skipping stones can take a little practice. Here are some tips on how to skip stones.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Select your stones.

    Choose stones that are smooth, flat, and of uniform thickness. It should fit comfortably into your hand and be light enough to easily throw.

  2. Step 2

    Place the stone in your hand.

    Hold the stone in your hand using your thumb and middle fingers. Curl your other fingers under the stone without holding it too tightly.

  3. Step 3

    Throw the stone.

    Face the water at a very slight angle. Lift your arm up and use a snapping motion to rapidly extend your arm towards water. Release the stone when your arm is fully extended. The stone should be thrown outward at a slight downward angle to allow the stone to slide across the surface of the water. For best results release the stone quickly with a wrist snap.

Tips & Warnings
  • The best time to skip stones is when the water is calm and placid. You'll have little success if the water is choppy.
