So you have decided to homeschool. You don't want to spend a lot of money on materials and you've heard the rumors that you can find it all online. The rumors are true. You can find free printables on practically any subject matter on the internet for free.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • computer with internet
  • printer
Step1
Choose the topics that you are going to cover. Some people choose to get large sections of material together at a time, say at the beginning of each semester. While others choose to go subject by subject. I suggest this method when you are starting out. That way if you get printables or lesson plans from one source that you don't like or doesn't work for you then you will not have to start over with your planning.
Step2
For this article we will use the example of body systems. Open up your browser and go to google. If you just type in body systems you will get back a larger number of results BUT these will be very diverse and not what you are looking for. Instead put in something like "body systems free printables." Search through the results, bookmarking the ones you are interested in. You might want to create a separate folder for homeschooling or printables.
Step3
Now go back to your google page and type in "body systems free lesson plans". Bookmark just as before. You can even do a third search using 'unit study'. If you are getting back a large number of results you can even add a grade level to your searches.
Step4
After you have found enough good websites on your subject you can now go through them. Some sites may require membership and/or payment. I advise you to use your own judgment on this. I, personally have not joined any of these sites because I've found what I needed for free and available to print without membership.
Choose the ones that best suit your needs and save them to print before you start the new subject. Always read through the material before you save or print to make sure it is what you want to cover on the subject and that it's age/grade appropriate. You will also want to read through the lesson plans to be sure it doesn't require material that you do not have or will not be able to come across.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always read the lesson plans
  • If your library doesn't have the specified book in a lesson plan, just substitute it for a similar book. Lesson plans are usually designed where you can do this easily.
  • Use your own judgment about joining sites or paying fees. You should be able to find ANYTHING you need for free.

on 7/18/2008 Great ideas, particularly about making a separate file to save these. Making separate files is quick, easy, and saves a lot of heartache down the road. Thanks for sharing!
