Things You'll Need:
- A few towels or blankets that you don't use often
- Energy efficient indoor light bulbs
- Lastly, just a little know how :)
-
Step 1
If its cold outside, placing towels at the bottom of doors and or windows will greatly reduce the amount of air and moisture passing through. This also helps with keeping the heat in, helping your heaters to work less.
-
Step 2
Replace your old bulbs with energy efficient bulbs. These are found just about anywhere, many with an average lifespan of 750 to 1000 hours! They also reduce the amount of electricity used, and give off lower emissions in your home, keeping it cooler in the summer. Keep in mind you don't have to swap them all out at once...if your like me, and on a budget, try buying one pack at a time.
-
Step 3
Keep an eye on your electricity bills. Once you start this, the savings become more and more apparent!
Also, try unplugging things while your away at work or just not using them. A lot of people don't realize that things as simple as coffee pots draw energy even while not being in use. Start small with this too, try unplugging your microwave and odds and ends around your house before you go to bed or leave for work.. -
Step 4
Try the dollar bill trick. Place a dollar bill almost all the way inside your fridge door with some of it sticking out. Try to pull out the dollar bill. If it slides out easily, its time for a new seal. Making sure you have a good seal on your refrigerator will greatly reduce the amount of energy it takes to run.
-
Step 5
If you want to go above and beyond, some public power suppliers now offer green electricity. This does cost a little more, but will give you peace of mind knowing that its just one more step towards a greener future!
Inquire at your local PUD about this option!
