When coloring your hair you can easily create a beautiful color, just as easily you can create a disastrous one. To avoid the disaster learn as much about the color you are using and know your color wheel.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Color wheel
  • Hair color base information (Each hair color has a base color or predominant pigment to it)
Step1
Color Wheel basics. Primary colors are Red, Yellow, Blue. Secondary colors are Orange, Green, Violet. Tertiary colors are created by mixing the primary with the secondary next to it on the color wheel. For example Yellow orange is a tertiary color.
Step2
Complimentary colors play a big role when trying to tone out unwanted tones or enhancing wanted tones. For example if you are trying to tone out the warmth that occurs in a color use a cool tone (green base).
Step3
Porous hair accepts ash & rejects warm. With this said those ends of the hair that have been highlighted 12 times in the past two years, will be difficult to take a color that looks natural and healthy.
Step4
Know the base pigments of the hair color. This information is different from manufacturer to manufacturer. Call & ask them.
Step5
Use the hot line as your hair coach

Tips & Warnings

  • When trying to reduce some colors you can create a muddy tone in the hair. Test a small section of hair before using a mixture the first time.
  • Porous over highlighted ends condition before your hair color application. This will balance out the porosity and allow the hair a better chance of taking color more evenly from scalp to ends.
  • Some unwanted colors need to be removed with lightener before applying color.
  • When toning out reds, not all of the red can be toned out, however you can always try darkest black.
  • This is basic information. It takes professionals a career to make this information work for them. That said I will always recommend that you leave this service to the professionals.
