Postpartum pain after vaginal delivery can be very frustrating. All you want to do is spend time with your new bundle of joy but you have pain slowing you down. Here are some tips and tricks to ease the pain and speed up your recovery.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Small Diaper or Ice Pack
  • Pillow or Inflatable Ring
  • Witch Hazel Pads
  • Bath Tub

Step1
Take sitz baths! I ignored everyone that kept telling me to take these baths and a week after she was born I started having pain worse than the day after she was born so I started listening and taking these baths and it was amazing how much better I felt. Just fill the bath with a couple of inches of water and sit in it, even for 5 minutes, as many times a day as you can. If you have pain with urination this may be a good time to go, I know it sounds disgusting, but all the water will help dilute the sting from your urine.
Step2
When urinating try to spray cool water onto your vagina to help keep everything clean and rinsed. Plus the cool water will provide some pain relief.
Step3
Sit on an inflatable ring or very cushy pillow to help ease the pressure on your sore bottom.
Step4
Use witch hazel pads. If you chill them in the fridge you'll get even more relief. Put them right into your underwear on top of your pad.
Step5
Use an Ice pack. If you don't have one I suggest making a diaper ice pack out of a newborn or small diaper. I suggest using Pampers. Tear open the end of the diaper with the tabs on it (like a bag of chips) and stuff it with ice cubes, fold the end over and use the velcro tabs to close the end. Put the whole pack into your panties and it can double as a pad. Plus it won't leak because the inside of the diapers turn to gel when wet. This is also good for ouchies when baby gets older!
Step6
Walk around. You'll find that you have to walk slowly at first but getting up and out of bed will help speed up recovery. It doesn't have to be far. Walk the hallway outside of your hospital room or walk in circles around your living room.
Step7
Ask the doctor if there's any pain medication that he suggests to help take the edge off the pain a bit.
