How to Straighten Men's Hair

Whether you're a girl trying to spruce up your man, or a guy going for a new look, hair straightening is an awesome way to change your look and create stick-straight locks. For some guys, ironing your hair can quickly turn into a lesson in first aid if you are inexperienced with hair appliances and have short hair, which is a bit more difficult to control when ironing. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Buy the proper tools for the job. Unless you have shoulder-length hair, you need a ceramic-plated straightening iron on the thin side, about 1 to 2 inches across. Go for one with heat control settings and a higher wattage. Also pick up a fine-tooth comb, straightening cream and a texturizing pomade to get your hair into shape.

Make sure that your hair is completely bone dry before your iron it, or it won't work. Clean hair works for straightening most hair types, but if you are a guy with especially curly or frizzy hair, consider ironing your hair the day after you wash it to get the best result.

Smooth on a straightening cream and distribute it evenly through your hair with the comb to avoid any grease slicks. This will help the iron do its job and protect your hair from some of the heat damage. Fire up the iron and wait for it to heat up all the way before you use it. Section off your hair with small clips or pins. Iron the bottom and side sections of your hair before you move on to the top layers.

Hold the iron in one hand and the comb in the other. Pick up a small section of the hair with the comb and follow through by clamping the iron at the root and then slowly pulling it down the hair shaft to the ends of your hair.

Continue this process, working your way to the top layers of your hair. Keep in mind that the direction you pull the iron is the direction that section of hair will lay against your head. As you move to the top layers this becomes more important and affects the overall style. For most styles, pull the top layers at an angle towards your nose to get them to lay correctly when you release them, or pull straight up into the air vertically.

Finish your style with texturizing wax or pomade. Use a very small amount and rub it in your palms to make it flow easier. Apply it only to the ends of the hair or you'll end up with a greasy mess before you even finish. Use the wax to separate different hair strands and create more texture and life at the ends for an edgy look.
