Dogs want to be up on furniture just as people do. They would rather sleep on the soft couch or your comfortable bed. However, if you don't want your dog climbing up on things, you will need to teach him that this is not acceptable behavior.

Things You'll Need:

  • Dog bed
  1. Step 1

Get a comfortable dog bed for your dog or make one with pillows and blankets. They don't want to lie on the floor any more than you do. In addition, older dogs may have sore joints, which hurt them when they lie on a floor. When you get the dog bed, show it to your dog, put toys in it and give your dog a treat if she lays in it.

  2. Step 2

Try to catch your dog when he climbs on things. Be consistent and immediately remove your dog from the furniture. Say, "No, Off," in a stern voice and point to the floor. While doing this, make eye contact with your dog.

  3. Step 3

Place him in his bed if he doesn't obey your command. Once your dog is in his bed, pet him and tell him he is a good boy. He will learn to connect the stern, disapproving voice with furniture, and your happy voice with his bed.

  4. Step 4

Give your dog praise and a treat if you see her resting in her own bed without you telling her to get off the furniture. Make sure you make her feel very special and loved.

  5. Step 5

Realize that if you have an adult dog whose owners let him climb on things whenever he liked at his previous house, it might take quite some time to teach him a new habit.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't hit your dog when teaching her any new habits or tricks.
