How to Mount a Unicycle

Unicycle riding is wonderful exercise. Without the gears of a standard mountain bike, unicycles require more coordination and physical effort to use. To mount a unicycle, you must have an open area to practice and a solid brace for your safety.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Stand beside something solid enough to use as a brace. (A fence, kitchen chair or tree all work well.) Place one hand on the object for stability.
Step2
Place the unicycle in front of your body. Pull back on the seat and insert it into position between your legs.
Step3
Rest one foot on the corresponding pedal in the 7 o'clock position. Push down on the pedal. This rocks the unicycle backward, fully underneath your body. Mount it the rest of the way by immediately placing your second foot on the second pedal.
Step4
Rock back and forth to gain your balance. Steady yourself with the help of your brace object, but take care not to run your leg into the side of it. When you're ready, let go of the brace and start your ride.

Tips & Warnings

  • To mount the unicycle without the help of the brace, simply skip the first step.
  • Male riders must take extra care when mounting a unicycle. Remember to place genitals on top of the seat when pulling it into position. Otherwise, when the unicycle rocks backward, injury can result.
  • Only experienced unicyclists should attempt free-mounting. Until you are proficient at unicycle riding, you must use a brace mount for your safety and the safety of others around you.
  • Unicycle mounting takes practice.
