An au pair can feel very lonely on the job. Away from her home and family--even her country--she is often cut off from a social life of her own. You can get over homesickness as an au pair, but it will take some work. The key is to remember the goals you're working toward.

Get closer to your host family. You have probably already bonded with the children; now try to get to know their parents. An au pair is more than simply hired help. She is a teacher and mentor who can become a trusted friend.

Find friendships among other staff members. If there is a cook or driver you encounter often, strike up a friendly conversation when appropriate. Be careful not to spend too much time chatting when you're working, but the occasional brief conversation shouldn't be a problem.

Introduce yourself when taking the children on outings. Other au pairs, nannies and parents take their children to places such as the park. Often, you can find a friendly person with whom to pass the time. Connecting with others eases feelings of homesickness.

Stay connected to your family with updates on your life. Even if nothing seems new, write a short note and include a funny story, a newspaper clipping or just a few thoughts. Your family members will appreciate hearing from you, and you'll feel more a part of their lives.

Teach the children about your home country. Show them pictures on the Internet and tell them stories about your life before moving to their country. You'll not only expand their knowledge, but you'll feel a little less homesick by bringing your home to work.
