Make Parents Understand

Sometimes talking to your parents can be difficult. It may feel as if they don't even want to understand how you feel. The truth is they do want to understand, but sometimes they can't. This may be because you aren't fully explaining yourself or you are trying to talk to them at the wrong time. Follow these steps to learn how to make your parents understand.

Instructions

    • 1

Set aside time specifically to talk to your parents. Keep this time free of any interruptions, so turn off the cell phone. Make sure that neither you nor your parents have anything planned for the day as the conversation may take awhile.

    • 2

Write down what you want to say so that you don't forget. Sometimes when the emotions kick in you will forget what you want to say. You won't be able to get your parents to understand if you can't remember what it is you want to say.

    • 3

Explain to your parents when you sit down that you have some things you want to say. Let them know that you want them to listen first and try to understand before they give their input. Tell your parents that you will listen to what they have to say as well when you finish talking.

    • 4

Speak clearly and say exactly how you feel without pointing fingers. Try to keep excess emotion out of the conversation even if you feel like crying. You need to appear responsible and in control.

    • 5

Listen to what your parents have to say as well. They may try to understand how you feel if you show that you respect them and attempt to understand where they are coming from as well.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't try to talk to your parents to make them understand anything right after work or when they are in a hurry and preoccupied. Parents often experience stress with work or activities during these times.
