Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Applicator bottle
  • Mixing bowl
  • Application brush
  • Mixing stick
  • Hair colors or kit
  • Hair dryer
  1. Step 1

Gather all the equipment and tools you need to mix the hair color. Your primary equipment includes plastic or rubber gloves, applicator bottle, hair colors, mixing bowl, brush and a mixing stick or utensil. A hair coloring kit contains most of the necessary equipment, or you can purchase separate components form a beauty supply store.

  2. Step 2

Select the colors you need to match and recreate the color you already wear. Stick with a color that blends with your natural hair color to make your new color. For example, if you are a dark blonde with orange-gold hair pigment, then you would not mix hair colors with a red base because it would create an orange, brassy color in your hair. Consult "The Hair Color Mix Book" for guidance on choosing the best color for your hair, skin and eyes.

  3. Step 3

Experiment with the amount of each color to use and conduct a strand test to check that the new color you have created matches the old color already in your hair. The strand test includes rinsing and drying the test hair to see the true color. Record the amount of each color you use if you do not use a kit, so you know how much to use for the next color retouch.

  4. Step 4

Follow the manufacturer's directions when mixing the colors for the retouch. Mix the colors in the applicator bottle or mixing bowl. Wear gloves and old clothes during the mixing and application process and also cover your floor in case of spills. Apply the color to your hair in sections using the applicator bottle and application brush.
