Photographing fog with a digital camera can be tricky, as fog can wash out color, making capturing images challenging. There are a few techniques you can do, and with each technique you create a different effect.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Open up a stop if you're able to look down on fog. By opening up a stop, you balance the color in the photograph, much as you would when photographing snow with a digital camera.
Step2
Go down about 2/3rds of a stop to underexpose the shot when you are shooting through fog with a digital camera. This will have the effect of darkening the image by bringing out the fog even more.
Step3
Try opening the stop to +1/3 when you are shooting through fog with a digital camera. This can lighten the picture and the fog you are photographing with a digital camera.
Step4
Underexpose the photograph when you are photographing fog with a digital camera. Using this technique can create and enhance the mood of your photograph.
Step5
Photograph the fog with the different exposures to find the effect you like. You won't see the full effect until you transfer the image from the camera to your computer. However, if you use the histogram, you can check whether you have exposed the image too much or too little.
