Wearing a weightlifting belt reduces stress on the lower back and prevents back hyperextension when doing overhead lifts. It also helps a lifter maintain proper positioning. Wear a weightlifting belt when performing exercises where the lifter's back supports the weight, or when doing exercises that cause the back to hyperextend. Here's how to pick a weightlifting support belt to protect your back.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consult with your doctor if you are buying a weightlifting belt due to a back injury. They can direct you to the belt that is appropriate for your specific needs.

  2. Step 2

Check the regulations of your power- lifting club or association. Many places have specific limitations on what size belts you can wear in competitions.

  3. Step 3

Determine what level of support you need. Most belts are 4 to 6 inches wide in the back. Your body size determines what size belt you need. Generally, taller weightlifters will need a wider belt.

  4. Step 4

Try on several different belts. The belt should fit around your waist and sit right at the top of your hips. It should be comfortable and you should feel pressure from it only when lifting. Make sure the belt isn't pinching your skin.

  5. Step 5

Decide what type of locking mechanism you want on your belt. 1 or 2 pronged buckles offer more support, while quick release levers are easier to tighten.

  6. Step 6

Buy a weightlifting belt at a sporting goods store, or check out the good deals and assortment at Inzer Advance Designs online. (See link in Resources.)

Tips & Warnings
  • Wearing a tight weightlifting belt increases your blood pressure. Only wear a weightlifting belt when doing exercises that directly impact your back.
  • If you are wearing the belt for looks, buy a 4-inch belt and keep it loose.
  • Consult with your doctor before beginning any weightlifting program.
