How to Make a Dog Stop Sleeping in Your Bed

Having your dog sleep in your room is a nice treat for him, but sleeping on the bed often becomes a bad habit. If your dog does sneak up to sleep on the bed, you might want to stop that habit before he takes over the whole bed.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Choose a word you can use consistently when you teach your dog to stay off the bed. The word "off" works well since it's one you'll easily remember.
Step2
Put a collar and leash on your dog and head into your bedroom to start the training session.
Step3
Climb on the bed and sit there. Hold the leash and wait for her to jump up, but don't encourage her to come up on the bed with you.
Step4
Say "off" and gently pull him off the bed to the floor. When you get him off the bed, make him sit. Praise him for being on the floor.
Step5
Sit on the bed again. Before she tries to climb up, tell her to sit. If she does manage to get on the bed, repeat Step 4.
Step6
Purchase your dog a bed of his own. Put it next to your bed so he feels close to you without being on your bed.
Step7
Bring your dog to her bed and have him lay in it. Each time he tries to climb in your bed, repeat the sit and off method and then walk him to his bed. Be sure to praise him whenever he follows your commands.

Tips & Warnings

  • The training process may take awhile until your dog understands the concept of "off."
  • Be consistent with your training for the best results.
