Learning to play slap bass with a drummer is the fastest way to hone your skills as a guitarist. The drum has the steadiest beat of any instrument, and once you've learned the basics, you can branch off into more creative avenues. Grooving is essential to getting gigs.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find a patient drummer or visit QuickBeat online for a sample drum beat.

  2. Step 2

Listen to the drum beat. Let your drummer jam solo for a few minutes before you jump into the session. When your drummer is using the bass drum, also known as the kick drum, slap the bass strings.

  3. Step 3

Slap by using your thumb to bounce the strings off the fretboard. Use the side of your thumb in a flexible manner. Your wrist should turn as if turning a doorknob.

  4. Step 4

Play an octave during the slapping technique. Use your index and pinky fingers to play the same note. Because you play 1 note a full octave higher, the notes should be 2 frets and 1 string apart.

  5. Step 5

Pluck when you hear the snare drum. Use your index and middle fingers to alternate plucking bass strings.

  6. Step 6

Practice different beats with your drummer for a variety of sounds and styles.

Tips & Warnings
  • For extra percussive sound, try the muting technique. In between notes, lightly hold your finger over the fret, rest it there and pick that string. Both you and the drummer will sound better.
