How to Make a Battleship Travel Game
It isn't easy to make travel versions of board games that have a lot of small pieces. A prime example is a naval warfare game like the classic "Battleship," with its numerous small pegs and ship pieces. But you can design a travel version that will avoid the small, losable pieces and be very compact to carry.

Draw two 10 X 10 square grids on two 8 X 14-inch sheets of paper (four grids total), with the grid squares a half-inch long and wide. You can do this by hand or on a computer program like Microsoft Paint.

Label each grid column one through ten, writing each number above the top squares on each grid. Label the rows A through J, writing the letters beside the far left squares.

Label the top grid on each page "Offense" and the bottom grid "Defense." Write the basic game instructions in the white space to the side, like how many spaces each ship takes up and what marks are used for "hit" and "miss."

Laminate both sheets of paper. Package them in a small thin box (large enough to hold 8 X 14-inch sheets) with at least two dry erase markers and cloth to wipe off the boards.

Choose where to place each of your ships and mark them on the Defense grid with dots or lines in the correct number of squares. The carrier is five squares, the battleship is four, the destroyer three and the frigate and submarine two.

Declare an attack on your turn by calling the letter and number of a square. Mark that square with an X on the Offense grid if your opponent says it's a hit. Mark it with a single slash if it's a miss.

Declare hits and misses on your opponent's turn, and mark down the hits on your Defense grid. Declare when one of your ships is completely sunk. Whoever sinks all the opposing ships wins.

Wipe off both boards with the cloth after the game is over.

Tips & Warnings
Stock four pens--two each of a different color. You can use one color for hits and another for misses so you can tell them apart more easily.
