Step 1
Get trained in whitewater kayaking before you begin this sport. It is important to learn how to maneuver the kayak and how to react if problems arise before your first adventure.
-
Step 2
Gauge your skill level against the conditions of the trip. Check both the weather reports and the river you will be traveling to verify they meet the level you are at. Kayak only to your ability and never beyond.
-
Step 3
Venture out with a group of kayakers. Going alone is extremely dangerous; at the very least you should have along one additional person. If trouble arises, the group will be there to assist and go for help if needed.
-
Step 4
Wear the proper safety gear. You should always have on a helmet and a life jacket. Both pieces should be securely strapped on and adjusted to fit properly.
-
Step 5
Dress for the elements. When kayaking in cold conditions, a wet suit is the best option. In warm weather, special attire should consist of hats and clothing that block your skin from the sun. You should wear layers of clothing in moderate weather in case you feel hot or cold.
