How to Make Silk Ribbon Roses

Crafters know silk ribbon roses add a special touch to many a project, whether it be a doll's outfit, a decorated spring hat or an embroidery project. Oftentimes, silk ribbons aren't ready made in colors the crafter needs. Instead of placing an expensive specialty order for custom-colored silk ribbon roses, learn how to make them.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rose-making tool or tapestry needle
  • Silk ribbon
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  1. Step 1

Purchase a rose-making tool at a craft store or make one with a large tapestry needle. Cut off the top of the needle's eye with pliers so that there are 2 prongs. Sand the cut edges with sandpaper.

  2. Step 2

Select a ribbon and slide it into the rose-making tool about 1/4 inch and apply a drop of glue on the end. Revolve the tool 3 full turns, being sure to never pull the ribbon too tightly. Add a drop of glue to the bottom after the third rotation to hold the rose together.

  3. Step 3

Fold the ribbon backwards after gluing and continue winding in the same direction. Put on another drop of glue at the base to hold in place. This creates the first rose petal.

  4. Step 4

Fold the ribbon backwards again, creating the second petal. Twist the rose making tool and secure this petal with a drop of glue at the bottom.

  5. Step 5

Repeat folding and gluing rose petals, continuing to turn the ribbon tool until the rose is at the desired size.

  6. Step 6

Snip off the end of the ribbon and glue it to the base of the rose. Carefully remove the silk ribbon rose from the rose making tool and allow to dry.

Tips & Warnings
