How to Make a Magnet With Only Metal

You need a magnet to in order to make a magnet with only metal. There is a process in which the particles of a metal becomes polarized. This method causes the particles to get into a pair of parallel lines, causing just metal to become either a permanent or temporary magnet. There is also a secondary method that requires a few more materials and results in an electromagnet.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Make a Magnet Using Another Magnet

    • 1

Obtain a magnet such as the refrigerator kind or one from a small speaker.

    • 2

Position the metal object, such as a fork, paper clip, screwdriver, scissors, or a nail, lengthwise on a flat surface.

    • 3

Touch the magnet across the metal but do not run it back and forth over it. Instead, take up the magnet after every swipe over the metal.

    • 4

Repeat the motion at least 50 times.

    • 5

Hover the now magnetized metal over a collection of tiny nails in order to test it.

    Make an Electromagnet

    • 6

Make a magnetic metal nail by using a wire, iron nail and battery.

    • 7

Connect one end of a insulated copper wire to the positive side of a D-cell battery.

    • 8

Coil the copper wire 15 times around an iron nail.

    • 9

Connect the other end of the wire to the negative side of a D-cell battery.

    • 10

Disconnect and use the combined nail and coiled wire as an electromagnet.

Tips & Warnings

  • As with anything electrical, be cautious and keep all materials away from liquid of any kind.
