Instructions

    • 1

Remove any food and drinks from the refrigerator. This may seem like an obvious step, but many campers have returned from a long trip and forgotten to remove items from the motor home refrigerator.

    • 2

Wipe out the inside of the fridge. Use a clean rag or sponge and a solution of either diluted bleach or white vinegar or water and baking soda. Leave the door open so that the inside dries completely.

    • 3

Empty the drip pan, if the refrigerator has one. Many refrigerators have a drip pan that collects excess moisture underneath and behind the appliance. Make sure this is completely dry and clean. While you're back there, you should also dust the refrigerator coils.

    • 4

Place a box of baking soda or charcoal fridge pack inside the fridge to absorb any odors. Some manufacturers make such items specially designed for smaller refrigerators.

    • 5

Prop the refrigerator door open when not in use. You can tape an object to the door frame to keep it from closing or purchase a specially designed device for this purpose. This helps keep air circulating inside the fridge and prevents mold growth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always wear a mask and rubber gloves when cleaning a moldy refrigerator. Breathing mold spores can be very unhealthy.

Everything above is great, but if it doesn't take care of the mold, try cinnamon oil. Just put a little at the bottom of a porcelain bowl, place the bowl in the fridge, blow a hair-dryer into the bowl on high hot, and close the door when you're finished. You'll never smell mold again, because it will be completely destroyed. Do it every 3 or 4 months, that should be enough. But wear a face mask or mouth covering--it's powerful stuff. It's a better antiseptic than the stuff hospitals use (check the nytimes).
