The best way you get better at anything is by practicing, but when playing Guitar Hero I and II, you might want to consider some additional techniques. By finding ways to improve your skills you can show off your talent, unlock the songs and have more fun with the game.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use the tutorials the game provides. The Guitar Hero tutorial offers you tips on how to hold your fingers, ways to use the frets and whammy bar and general hints to improve your skills.

  2. Step 2

Learn to strum up and down. This skill helps you during the faster songs so your thumb won't get tired from pushing down so often. Practice sliding your fingers along the colored fret buttons to get used to the feel of the guitar.

  3. Step 3

Use the best controller for improving your skills. Use a wired guitar--wireless guitars look great but often lag and run out of batteries at the worst times. Adjust the strap so the guitar sits comfortably when you play.

  4. Step 4

Stand up and give yourself room when you play. When your body is free to move you have more control when strumming and pushing the fret buttons or when tilting the guitar.

  5. Step 5

Practice songs. Play in training mode to break down difficult pieces of specific songs. Work on playing with all 5 colored fret buttons, moving your hand to use all buttons in Hard and Expert modes. Take advantage of the game's ability to slow the songs down and speed them up to allow you to work at your own pace.
