How to Keep You and Your Horse Safe in the Rain

There are very few wild horses left in America. If the horses were wild, they would know what to do in the rain to keep safe. But people have domesticated horses and keep these mighty creatures in stables, out of their natural habitat. This can make horses dangerous when unexpected events such as rainstorms occur. Here is how to keep you and your horse safe in the rain.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Watch your horse's body language for warning signs that he is uncomfortable. Uncomfortable horses may bolt or act unexpectedly. Look for tense muscles in the horse. Watch for ears that are no longer relaxed between slightly back and slightly up. Watch for the horse's head to suddenly turn toward something. Watch for a quicker than normal breathing pattern. Know your horse in both settings so you know when danger is approaching.
Step2
Take refuge if the horse becomes uncomfortable. Find a nearby covering such as a large tree, barn, or bridge to hide under until the rain passes.
Step3
Untie the horse. A tied-up horse can become injured if he is spooked and attempts to jump or move away. Untie the horse with caution and move away.
Step4
Stay on him if it is a light rain and the horse seems comfortable.
Step5
Move the horse to a larger area if he doesn't have a barn. Move him out of a small ring or training area. Give him room to move around or to find shelter.
