How to Help Others

Although we all have busy lives, it's important to take some time and consider the well being of others. If you can spare only a small portion of your time, you can perform volunteer work as a way to help others.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick the type of nonprofit organization you wish to volunteer at. Most communities have food banks, shelters, hospitals, senior centers, and more in need of volunteers. Check your local phone book to find charitable organizations in your neighborhood.

    • 2

Let the organization know the time commitment you can give them. You may not have the ability to volunteer on a frequent basis, but whatever time you can spare will be appreciated.

    • 3

Help others in your neighborhood. You can do more than volunteer for a charitable organization. For example, offer free babysitting services to a frazzled single mom or run to the store for the elderly woman next door.

    • 4

Make a monetary donation. Not everyone has the time to volunteer at a nonprofit organization. However, you can still help others by giving some money to charity. Start up a collection to make an even higher donation.

Tips & Warnings

  • Research any charity before giving them a donation. You can use the website Charity Navigator to help you find a deserving organization to give money to (see Resources).

  • You can donate more than just money to many organizations. During the holiday season, many charities look for both toy and food donations. Check with local churches and hospitals to find out the schedule for their food and toy drives.
