When your plastic container comes out of the dishwasher or drying rack covered in spots, it's time to take action. Prevent those spots by washing your plastic containers separately in one of several cleaning solutions.

Things You’ll Need:

Baking soda
Lemon drink mix
Seltzer water
Water
Dish soap
Dish towel

Step1

Add a tablespoon or two of baking soda to some hot water. Soak your plastic containers in the solution, and then wash them in soapy water.

Step2

Try soaking your stained plastic containers in a sink full of hot water mixed with lemon drink mix. Only lemon flavor works because of the acidic flavoring.

Step3

Clean your containers with seltzer water. Use a scrub brush to remove hardened food, and rinse with hot water.

Step4

Use a spot-free detergent or rinse in a dishwasher. Make sure you use the entire drying cycle if your dishwasher has one.

Step5

Rinse the plastic container very well. Get all the soap suds off the plastic before air-drying it.

Step6

Dry the containers using a soft dish towel immediately after washing them to remove any soap scum that remains.

Tips & Warnings

Spray your plastic container with cooking spray before filling it with a tomato-based food or anything else that leaves a stain. It prevents the stain from sticking.
If you don't have lemon drink mix, try rubbing a lemon on the surface of the container if it's stained. Then rinse it again.
