Things You'll Need:
- Umbrella
- Scissors
- Thread
- Straight pins
- Needle
- Two large buttons
- Two 36-inch pieces of cording or shoelaces
- Sewing machine
-
Step 1
Separate the fabric from the spokes of an umbrella that's no longer functioning. Expect to leave a small hole when the center piece of the frame is removed.
-
Step 2
Fold over 1 inch, wrong sides together, all around the perimeter of the umbrella fabric. Use straight pins to secure the hem while it's sewn. Set the straight pins into the fabric perpendicular to the edge of the fabric with the points closest to the fold.
-
Step 3
Use matching or contrasting thread. Sew around the edge of the fabric. Leave a casing about 3/4 inch wide. Backstitch at the beginning and end of the stitching.
-
Step 4
Make a small slit in the top edge of the hem to thread the drawstring. Line up the edges of the fabric and find the spot directly opposite the slit, then make a second slit there.
-
Step 5
Take a length of cording or a long shoelace and fasten it to a large safety pin. Thread the drawstring through the casing, starting at one opening and exiting at the other. Repeat through the other openings. Run it around the other side of the casing until cording hangs out of both slits.
-
Step 6
Tie an overhand knot with the ends of the two pieces of cording on one side. Do the same on the other side of the umbrella fabric. Pull the drawstrings to close the pouch.
-
Step 7
Open up the pouch as wide as possible. Take a large button and center it in the bottom of the pouch over the hole made by the removal of the umbrella frame. Place a second same-size button on the outside of the pouch, lining it up with the first button. Sew the two buttons securely in place.
