How to Get Fit as a Teenager

Healthy habits established as a teenager can last a lifetime but for many kids, participation in athletic endeavors slows down as schools relax physical education requirements. Getting fit doesn't mean you have to join the football team but it does mean you'll have to get off the sofa.

Instructions

    • 1

See your doctor before you start an exercise routine. Just like the medical assessment school athletes must get from their doctors before participating, your doctor will check out your heart and respiratory system before he gives you a clean bill of health.

    • 2

Join a community sports team for exercise at a friendly level of competition. If strenuous school sports aren't your thing, a local recreation commission can provide a list of teams and available sports.

    • 3

Swim a few laps after school and on summer days. Swimming is an all-over exercise that won't harm your joints. Increase your swimming distance by one or two laps monthly.

    • 4

Pick interactive video games instead of ones where you sit still. Some games allow you to become part of the action by using remote hand devices that mimic tennis, baseball or boxing moves. You'll get a great workout while having a blast.

    • 5

Grab an old hula-hoop and turn up the stereo. Hula-hoops are fun and you'll burn calories as you practice moves made famous by teens in the 1960s. Use your knees, neck and arms, not just your waist, and add multiple hula-hoops to increase your fun and dexterity.

    • 6

Start dancing. Teen dances are fun and they provide a source of exercise when you dance to the fast songs. If you're uncomfortable dancing in front of others, practice at home. You'll perfect the newest moves while getting fit.

    • 7

Travel by anything but car. Get on your bike, blades, board or just walk. Plan ahead so you have enough time to reach your destination. Wear a lightweight backpack to store an extra pair of shoes and to stash your board when you get there.

    • 8

Find another teenager with the same goals. Even if you're not into sports, the two of you can walk or jog. The less time you spend in front of the television, the better your chances of getting fit and developing good exercise habits.
