Scale, scum and algae are all common swimming pool stains. To keep your pool clean, follow a few basic instructions to diagnose and remove the stains. You can purchase a large assortment of products to eliminate stains.

  1. Step 1

    Test the pool water regularly and add the required daily and weekly chemical treatments to balance your water and prevent stains.

  2. Step 2

    Purchase a water stain kit. These are available from a variety of pool chemical manufacturers. Select the kit from the brand of chemicals you are presently using.

  3. Step 3

    Follow the provided test kits directions. The directions explain to you how to collect the sample. It may need to be a specific sample or a water sample from any part of the swimming pool. Test that sample based on the directions provided to identify the stain.

  4. Step 4

    Compare your results with the diagnosis chart in the directions. Once you have the diagnosis, purchase the recommended chemicals. Some companies give you the name of the product

  5. Step 5

    Use the chemicals as directed to remove the stain. The packaging will explain how to treat the stain, the amount of chemicals to use and the length of time the cleanup will take.

  6. Step 6

    Call the professionals. It may turn out that your particular stain are beyond your skills. Contact a pool maintenance company to test your water and stain sample.
