How to Make a Set of Weights
A simple set of exercise weights can be made from throwaway household items. While these homemade weights probably won't turn you into the next bodybuilding champion of the world, they can provide the average person with enough resistance to keep you in shape.
Things You'll Need
- Two 1-gallon plastic milk jugs
- Two 1/2-gallon plastic milk jugs
- Two plastic, 13-oz. or 14 oz. shampoo bottles
- Scale
- Knee-high tube socks
- Dried beans or uncooked rice
Instructions

1
Fill 1-gallon jugs with tap water using a measuring cup. One gallon equals 16 cups and weighs approximately 8.5 lb.
-
2
Use a measuring cup to fill 1/2-gallon jugs with tap water. One half-gallon equals 8 cups and weighs approximately 4.25 lb.
-
-
3
Pour water into the two shampoo bottles, filling them to the neck. The average shampoo bottle holds 13 fl. oz. or 14 dry oz.
-
4
Make ankle weights by pouring dried beans or rice into two socks until you reach the desired weight. Center the filler in the middle of the sock and tie each end, leaving enough extra material to tie it around your ankle.

5
Weigh each item. Similar items should weigh the same.
