How to Do a Speed Vault in Parkour

A speed vault is one of the most basic moves in parkour, and is used to get over an obstacle when running. The goal of a speed vault is to propel yourself up and over the object without stopping your forward motion using your momentum. A speed vault in parkour looks like the same motion used to jump over a hurdle in track.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Run forward at full speed with the obstacle you need to jump directly in front of you. Estimate the depth of the object and spot a landing area on the opposite side.

  2. Step 2

Plan on a spot to place one of your hands as you pass over the obstacle. You don't need to use your hand to push yourself over the object, but just to ensure that your body can pass over the obstacle.

  3. Step 3

Push off your base leg as you approach the object and swing both legs up to the opposite side of your body. Set down the hand that is on the same side of your body as the leg you jumped from. You should be leaning to one side, so simply use that arm to guide yourself over the obstacle.

  4. Step 4

Land on the ball of one foot and continue in stride. Bend your knee as you hit the ground to avoid shock from the impact.

Tips & Warnings
  • Exercise caution when doing any parkour moves, as they can result in falls and injury. If you're a beginner, practice in knee pads, elbow pads and a helmet. Because the motion is so similar to jumping a hurdle, practicing on a track with hurdles is also a safe and useful way to get started.
