Why pay $50 for a stock t-shirt vest at the mall. You can easily make a one-of-a-kind vest yourself. Enlist the help of someone with a sewing machine or if stitching is a problem, eliminate the pockets and the hems to the cut edge up the front.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • T-shirt
  • Yardstick or 18 inch ruler
  • Sharp scissors or shears
  • Sewing machine
  • Matching thread
  • Straight pins
  1. Step 1

Start with a new or laundered, used t-shirt. Lay the t-shirt on a flat work surface. Iron the shirt as needed.

  2. Step 2

Use the shears and carefully cut the sleeves from the shirt. Set the two sleeves aside.

  3. Step 3

Determine the center of the front of the t-shirt. Use a colored pencil or disappearing marker and a straight edge and draw a liner from the neck to the hem. Use the shears and cut straight up the front of the shirt.

  4. Step 4

Wind the bobbin and thread the machine with matching thread. Turn the sleeves inside out. Sew straight across the cut edge of each sleeve so that rectangles are formed for pockets. Sew across the straight side of the sleeve edge or leave it open for a multi-compartment pocket.

  5. Step 5

Press under about 1/2 inch of the raw edge down the front of each side of the vest. Stitch top to bottom, backstitching at the start and finish of the stitching.

  6. Step 6

Pin the pockets to the bottom front each side of the t-shirt front. Starting at one side of the top edge, backstitch several times, then sew down to the next corner.

  7. Step 7

Drop the needle through the fabric and sew across the bottom of the pocket. Lift the presser foot and turn the fabric. Repeat at the next corner and sew up the third side of the pocket. Backstitch at the corners and at the sides of the top edge.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't cut too close to the seam lines.

on 5/8/2009 I think that this could be a great fashion icon. The thicker the shirt, the better. Photos would be helpful in constructing this piece. Consider a larger sized shirt for a longer vest, which could still be very slim fitting by taking in the seams on the side. Explore with patterned shirts too!
