How to Create Dark Art Using Photoshop

Dark art is a beautiful example of free expression, creativity and emotion. It's also a handy skill to have around Halloween. With Adobe Photoshop, you can let your imagination run rampant with color and texture choices, changing reality to stunning macabre images. Take a beautiful photo into Photoshop and tweak it with the click of a few buttons to change the mood from friendly to frightening.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Open a stock photo image of a face with eyes. The image should be greater than 900 x 1200 pixels. Smaller images are harder to work with and look bad when enlarged. On the other hand, a large image shrinks easily.
Step2
Save your original stock photo in case you mess up at a later point. Paste a copy of the stock image into a new layer in Photoshop.
Step3
Remove the existing background, preferably with the eraser tool since it's the most accurate. Fill the background with a dark color.
Step4
Enlarge the image. Begin filling in the eyes by using a soft-edged brush and the smudge tool. Start with the corner of each eye. Use the burn tool to add shadows and bruises.
Step5
Drag in cracked texture and set it to overlay. Then use the fuzzy eraser to erase parts that don't cover skin.
Step6
Click on "Filters," and then "Liquify" to distort the face shape. Use the dodge tool to make pale spots.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sensitive about where you display your artwork. Many people, especially young children, find dark art disturbing, and they could have nightmares.
