How to Have a Good Halloween Costume for a Preteen Girl

As a preteen girl, you probably want to choose a costume that is hip, creative and cute without making you look too old. With a little time and effort you can be the hit of your Halloween party.

1. Look to movies, cartoons or popular culture for character ideas. Hip clothes from your closet can be dressed up with a glittery wig, some makeup and a silvery microphone for a cool pop star costume. Think about your favorite movie of the year and consider dressing as the lead character. Cartoon characters can be made sassy and current with accessories that are available to purchase at a party store.

2. Think historic. Period costumes are elegant for girls and women of any age. A civil war era hoop skirt or a French revolution gown make for an extravagant costume, especially if paired with a wig. Do a little bit of research on your favorite era and develop a costume idea from it. Even costumes from recent history such as hippies or poodle-skirted sock hoppers are good choices for preteen girls.

3. Sparkle and shine with fairy dust. Fairies and pixies are extremely popular costumes for teens and preteens alike. Experiment with dramatic glittery makeup, including wings and butterflies painted on the face. Sparkly wings are available in all colors and shapes at party stores or even drug and discount stores around Halloween time. Wear your hair in curls and add a crown of flowers. Use glitter spray on your skin and your hair. Carry a wand or a bag of fairy dust made of clear iridescent glitter.

4. Go ghoulish. Spooky Halloween costumes are never out of style and can be appropriate for any age. A girl vampire or mummy queen can be traditional but fun costumes. If you are looking for a current take on a traditional monster costume, try wearing the makeup with funky clothing to make the idea more hip. Colorful striped tights and a glittery wig in a hot color make an old fashioned witch catch up with the times. Switch traditional black capes and gowns with brighter colors for a modern twist.

• Avoid trendy costumes that tend to be too revealing and mature for preteens. Low cut blouses or super short mini skirts in clingy fabrics are not appropriate for preteen girls, even though they may be available in your size. Steer clear of any costumes with mature themes as well.
