You can find cool multimedia on the web. Whether you're looking for movies, cartoons or cool tunes, chances are you can find it with a simple search. But if you want to take it with you, you might run into problems. Apple's QuickTime Pro offers one inexpensive solution, and you can crack the files it doesn't handle with other utilities.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Set Apple QuickTime as your default media player. On Apple computers it is always the default. With Windows, you can do this during the installation process by clicking on "Configure File and Mime Types," or you can the preferences later.
Step2
Go to the site with the file you want to download. The file may play immediately or you may have to click on a link to the file. The file will begin to play back in the QuickTime Window. If prompted to download an additional QuickTime component to play the media, follow the directions.
Step3
Play the file all the way through. When it is finished, click on the downward triangle at the right of the playback control bar. Save the file in its native or in QuickTime format. Save your first few files in both formats until you know which will give you the best results for your needs.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can find a number of QuickTime add-ons to support WNV, FLV and other formats not supported directly supported by Apple.
  • If you don't see the QuickTime playback control bar, you may be able to find the multimedia file name using your browser's view source code feature. Type the URL to the file name itself and see if that will play.
  • Some servers, such as YouTube, bypass QuickTime with their own FLV players. You can find and download a number of programs to capture FLV files directly from the web.
  • Don't download copyrighted files without permission.
