Step1
Remain calm and gain control of your guests if your party was a little rowdy. Don't open the door until you know where your guests are and what they are doing.
Step2
Turn the music down before you open the door. More than likely the police are there because of a noise complaint.
Step3
Designate someone to keep track of the condition of the air. This step doesn't imply that anything illegal is going on. It just makes a better impression to the police if the air smells fresh. Too much smoke in the air may raise a police officer's suspicion.
Step4
Open the door. Relax and listen to what the police have to say. Do not argue or offer information. Do not invite the police in unless they have a search warrant.
Step5
Call an attorney if the police ask you lots of questions and you are feeling uncomfortable about what is being asked. The police must read you your rights or nothing you say can be held in evidence, but keep your talk to a minimum anyway.
