Step 1
Set aside some time before your next practice to create a new hairstyle. This way, you can test drive the new style at practice and if it doesn't work out, you can just mash it into a ponytail and come up with something different before the game.

Step 2
Braid your hair. If you have shoulder-length or longer hari, braids are a good hairstyle for athletes, as they are attractive and functional. Double French braids, cornrows and plaiting your hair into tiny braids secured with clear elastics can keep you moving without having to worry about your hair getting in the way.

Step 3
Express creativity with your ponytail. Tossing wet hair fresh from the shower into a ponytail is bad for your hair and your look. Instead, blowdry your hair, add a styling cream and create a mini-pompadour and ponytail duo. Grab a few strands of hair close to the hairline on top of your forehead. Pin them loosely a few inches at your crown, and then pull your hair into a high ponytail with a sturdy elastic band. Use hairspray to keep everything in place.

Step 4
Master the bun, which is just a ponytail wrapped around itself. You can twist your hair into many small buns, arrange cute, messy double buns, or set one low or high in the back of your head. Start with dry hair. Create volume at the roots with a spray or gel to avoid that slicked-down, thinning look. Pull your hair gently to the desired bun area and make a ponytail. Secure the tail with and elastic band, and then wrap the ends into a coil. Secure the bun with a second elastic. Add a few bobby pins to keep your bun in place and finish with a shine spray.

Step 5
Style your short hair into a sporty look. Arrange your hair as you normally would, but then add finishing spray to keep it place. Small plastic clips are a great tool for getting your hair out of your face. Use one to pin to back the hair off your forehead, or use three or four to create a headband effect.
