How to Play Defense in Girls Lacrosse

Lacrosse is a popular team sport for middle school and high school girls. Defense is an integral part of game, and all team members must contribute on defense or the defensive strategy won't be successful. The team's goalie will have a more difficult time playing her position unless her teammates support her efforts.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold your stick vertically to quickly intercept and prevent passes by an opposing player.

    • 2

Keep your eye on the ball when you're off ball. Position your body to prevent the player with the ball from passing to your target player. Be aware of the positioning of other players on the field as well as the ball.

    • 3

Stay close to your target player so she doesn't have too much room to move.

    • 4

Remain behind the center line. Defensive players shouldn't cross midfield in most cases because this may lead to offensive rushes and scoring chances for the other team.

    • 5

Pass the ball a safe distance from your goal to ensure that you don't lose possession of the ball near the goalie.

    • 6

Remember to stick check to help gain control of the ball.

Tips & Warnings

  • "Being on the ball" refers to a defender who covers the opposing player with the ball. Conversely, you're "off ball" if you're covering an opposing player who doesn't possess the ball.
